Band director Chris Saito put together a video of several band members playing the school song. There were a total of 23 band members that played the song.
On April 15, directors Saito and Mike Dynes posted to each band’s Google Classroom a video of Saito playing the school song, suggesting that they also play it to create a virtual band.
To make each player line up perfectly, students either had to use a metronome while they played, or listen to the sample video of Saito playing. Saito then pieced the videos together by instrumental sections, and put each section together in the large video.
There were four percussionists, three trombones, three alto saxophones, one tenor saxophone, one bari saxophone, one bass guitar, five trumpets including Saito, one french horn, one mellophone, five flutes and one piccolo in the video. Kristin Boyler played both flute and piccolo for this video. Students from all three bands were present in the video.
Saito announced the idea to students and was already working on the video before the release of the University of Iowa Marching Band playing their school song remotely.
