“A Seussified Christmas Carol” set to premiere Dec. 13 and Dec. 14

December 13, 2019

“A Seussified Christmas Carol” is is being performed Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 14 at 11 a.m., and tickets cost $5 per person or $20 for a family up to six.

The play is based on Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” with a twist of Dr. Seuss’s “Seussical.”

“Basically, it is a seussified Christmas carol. It is really funny and has humor for kids and adults. It’s really colorful and over the top,” Abbey Totherow said.

There are activities for children on Friday at 6 p.m. and a children’s workshop on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. At the children’s workshop kids can participate in theatre games, explore backstage, make arts and crafts, listen to music, eat holiday treats, and more.

Even though there are activities for younger audiences, the play can be appreciated by the entire community.

“We thought the show would be enjoyable for audience members of all ages, and the cast was large enough to get as many new people involved as possible,” student director Will Luebke said.

Typically Luebke performs in plays and musicals, but as a senior Luebke has had the opportunity to be a mentor and direct the senior-directed play with the help of Nika Larson.

“I have always been on stage, and I wanted to see what it was like on the other side of the production. Being a director allows for your own vision for the show to come alive on stage. Being an actor is different because you are mainly taking directions rather than giving directions,” Luebke said.

For Totherow, this is her first time experiencing the performing aspect of being a part of a show.

“I’ve never been in a show. I’ve done the makeup for some of the musicals and plays, but this year I made a point to try out for them,” Totherow said.

The spring musical this year, chosen by director Katherine Howard, is “Shrek,” a comical musical about an ogre who is sent on a quest by a king to save a locked-away princess.

“I plan on auditioning for “Shrek.” I am very excited about it,”’ Vanessa Jensen said.

Although auditions for Shrek are coming up on Dec. 18, the cast of “A Seussified Christmas Carol” is currently excited to perform their show for the school and community.

“The play is a sweet Christmas show with some cute humor, and I highly recommend coming for some Christmas cheer,” Jensen said.
