Student Council holds events to benefit Quad City Student Hunger Drive
Quad City Student Hunger Drive
According to the Food Aid Foundation, 1 in 7 people worldwide go hungry. For six weeks each fall, Quad City high schools come together to collect food and monetary donations for local people in need.
Last year, Bettendorf came in first place for Division A, collecting 62,392 pounds of food. This year, the goal is to reach 65,000 pounds of food. Student Council sponsors several events during the Hunger Drive in order to reach our goal.
The annual Silent Auction will take place on Oct. 13 during the football game against Iowa City High. This event is an opportunity to give back to the Hunger Drive while earning baskets that have been donated by local businesses and clubs.
The Silent Auction “student section” baskets have prizes that are geared specifically towards students, such as a Prom themed basket, student athlete basket, and two reserved spots in North Lot. All proceeds from the Silent Auction will go towards the Hunger Drive.
If you are looking for an active way to get involved in the Hunger Drive, Capture the Cans is the event for you. The event will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 11, from 6:30-8 and sign ups are due Friday, Oct. 6. Students who participate are divided into teams to compete for the most cans. The event will take place in the football stadium. All cans will go to benefit the Hunger Drive.
On Oct. 18, the Chick Fil A on 53rd Street is sponsoring a Spirit Night. Ten percent of the proceeds that night will be donated, and you are also able to bring additional cans. Other resturant benefits include Your Pie on Oct. 26 and Panchero’s on Nov. 1.
Powderbuff, a male volleyball tournament, will be held on Oct. 24 and a Quad City high school dodgeball tournament on Oct. 28, will both take place at Betendorf High School. More details on both events to come.
Collection for non perishable food items ends on Nov. 9.
