Bettendorf Growl speaks with Quad City man visiting Las Vegas

October 3, 2017

Following the largest mass shooting in modern American history, the Bettendorf Growl spoke with one Quad City man currently visiting Las Vegas.

On late Monday night, the Bettendorf Growl's Andrew Ball spoke with Kevin Walker who is visiting Las Vegas for the Wedding MBA convention.

"When I got picked up from the airport, my Uber driver - I just caught a ride with somebody - and the other kid got dropped of at Luxor, which is right next to Mandalay Bay," Walker said.

At 10:08 p.m. local time (12:08 a.m. central time), the first shots fired were reported at the Route 91 Music Festival near the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.

64-year-old Stephen Paddock was firing on as many as 22,000 concert goers below from his 32-story hotel room.

When Walker was near the Luxor and Mandalay Bay around 3:30 p.m., he said the music festival was already busy.

Walker's hotel is nearly four miles from Mandalay Bay, and by the time the shooting occurred, he was nearly two miles away from the scene.

Walker said he first heard reports of the shooting on the radio, but the details were scarce at the time and was tired from his flight earlier in the day.

At 4:30 a.m. Monday morning, Walker woke to missed calls and texts from his wife, family, friends and nearly 90 others contacting him about his safety.

"I was pretty amazed," Walker said at the magnitude the shooting had grown to overnight.

Following the shooting, Walker spoke with an army veteran who had attended the concert with his wife. Walker says the veteran had been shot in the foot at the concert. The veteran had tried to help a female victim next to him who was shot in the chest, but she is believed to have been one of the 59 killed in the attack.

Authorities confirmed Monday evening that 59 were killed and 516 were injured in the attack.
