Bulldogs fall to Tigers, look ahead to Assumption

In the home opener for the 2017 football season the Bulldogs dropped to the West Des Moines Valley Tigers 16-23. The Dogs stayed within striking distance the entire game but could not pull out over the Tigers in the end.

Standouts for Bettendorf include senior running back Nijel McIntosh with 69 rushing yards on the night and a goal line touchdown. Junior quarterback Carter Bell commanded his team with 25 rushing yards behind McIntosh and 126 passing yards. There were great standout players on the defensive side as well. Senior Jatten Kuhrt dominated on Friday, racking up 11 total tackles. Along with Kuhrt, senior Desani Carter picked up two sacks on the night.

Bettendorf now sits on the AP poll number 8 in the state after the defeat. Bettendorf kept up with one of the most predominant names in Iowa football, and the team is looking to bounce back from last week’s loss and defeat the Assumption Knights, Thursday at Brady Street Stadium.

The Knights stat sheets imply that the team is dependent on star senior quarterback Jayce Levy. Levy led the team in rushing (72 yards), receiving (99 yards), and surprisingly came in second place for Assumption’s passing yards with only 73 yards (note: junior Brandon Schlichting’s two passing completions that beat Levy’s passing yards were caught by Levy himself).

Assumption defeated North Scott last week 17-10 on a nail-bitter with a late interception. Assumption looks to continue its strong start to the season as it faces off against the Bulldogs.

Bettendorf may have dropped its home opener, but the confidence moving into the rest of its season is strong. The Bulldogs will play tonight at Brady Street Stadium against a Jayce Levy-focused Assumption Knights.
