Five injured in explosion at Dewitt plant, natural gas to blame

UPDATE: In a statement released from Guardian Industries Sunday morning, five employees were treated for injuries, but have been released from care without serious injury.

 

The cause of the explosion involved natural gas; however, an investigation into the explosion and damage of the facility is ongoing. 

 

Officials from the company ask that employees do not return to the facility until they can ensure the plant is safe for operating. 

 

 

ORIGINAL STORY: 

 

DEWITT (Bettendorf Growl) ― Authorities confirm an explosion occurred at Guardian Glass just  before 7 p.m. Saturday evening.

 

The cause of the explosion was unknown.

 

The plant was evacuated and emergency personnel were on scene from as far as the Rock Island Arsenal.

 

Multiple injuries were reported, but the extent of the injuries and the number of people taken to the hospital are unknown.

 

No deaths were reported in the incident.

 

Guardian is expected to release a statement Sunday morning.
