Nike releases new wear for Muslim women, others

his year, Nike has released two new products supporting activewear for plus size women and Muslim female athletes. Nike Plus Size Collection launched March 3, 2017, and Nike Pro Hijab collection is predicted to be released in the spring of 2018.

 

The Nike Plus Size Collection will provide sizes 1x to 3x and bra sizes that go up to a 38E. This line includes leggings, sports bras, and workout wear. The collection is available now on Nike.com and in select retailers in North America and Western Europe.

 

“...comfy and stylish clothes accessible to people who haven’t been able to wear the brand,” Teen Vogue wrote.  

However, Nike has come across a bigger problem when launching this line. Once the line was announced, customers were split. Some believed that Nike is promoting obesity, and others believe size does not matter.

 

“Positive body image and self confidence is something I advocate, not just for me personally but for every woman and young girl, no matter what their size. It’s about time real bodies are celebrated,” Grace Victory, Nike Plus Size model writes.

 

This week, Nike announced its Pro Hijab collection for female Muslim athletes. The hijab is expected to cost $35 and is made of lightweight, stretchy mesh polyester and will come in gray, black, and obsidian. The hijab also features an elongated back, so the top doesn't become untucked while performing. Sarah Attar, an Olympic runner from Saudi Arabia, and Amna Al Haddad, an Olympic weight lifter from from Emirati, were inspirations to create this collection.

 

“We worked with Amna and a variety of other athletes to see what they needed and wanted in a performance hijab,” a spokesperson told Al Arabiya from the Washington Post.

 

Reaction to the new collection has been mixed, as some women are questioning the placement of the Nike logo on the garment, but others believe the hijab is creating empowerment for Muslim athletes.

 

“...Nike wields a great deal of influence in sports, which is important at a time when not all sports allow women to compete in hijabs,” the Washington Post writes.

 

Overall, Nike has started making a change in athletic wear for a variety of women. The start of the Nike Plus Size Collection and the Nike Pro Hijab collection has been influential to not only customers, but to other athletic companies as well.
