“La La Land” receives mixed reviews

The modern movie musical “La La Land” has been nominated for a record tying 14 Academy Award nominations and won all seven Golden Globe awards it was nominated for, including Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy.

“I think ‘La La Land’ was incredible, and they really brought movie musicals to a new level by allowing it to not have an excess amount of songs but a decent amount. They deserve the nomination because they found a way to capture both musical loving people and movie loving people,” Leticia Francisco said.

“I had seen a trailer months before it came out and waited painstakingly for the movie to finally release. The songs were incredible and infectious, and the characters were relatable and hilarious, especially Ryan Gosling’s character who was super sassy,” Grant Mougin said.

However, despite the overwhelming award show and critic success, some movie buffs still aren’t sure if the movie is as amazing as it has been promoted to be.

Jeff Yang, a CNN opinion columnist, reviews the movie as “overrated, cliche or simply put, kind of boring” in his article, “‘La La Land’: Hollywood’s failed bid to make America great again.” He also criticizes the Academy Awards and their lack of nominations and wins for people of color.

This year, the other best picture nominations face relevant topics like “racism, homophobia, the generational cycle of violence, the erasure of women of color from our nation's historical narrative.” “La La Land” tells the story of “first-world troubles into epic distraction,” with the help of its bright colors and musical numbers.

Despite the mixed reviews and criticism, “La La Land” is an escape from some of the world’s harsh realities. Some notable songs include “City of Stars,” “Start a Fire,” and the opening number, “Another Day of Sun” and will be stuck in your head long after the credits roll.
