And the nominees are...
LA Times (Dale Robinette / Lionsgate)
On Jan. 24, the nominations for the 89th Academy Awards were released. Both experienced critics and novice moviegoers anxiously await the announcement of the nominees.
Alternatively called the Oscars, the Academy Awards is the biggest event in Hollywood. Winning an Oscar is the highest honor for anyone involved in the American film industry.
Topping off the nominations with a record-tying 14 nominations is the musical “La La Land.” The film, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, tied with “Titanic” and “All About Eve” for the most nominations ever.
Other ground-breaking films in this year’s nominations include “Moonlight,” “Fences,” and “Hidden Figures.”
These films celebrate all cultures and races. Six black actors are nominated for awards, yet another record.
Dev Patel, nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for “Lion,” is the third Indian actor to be nominated for an oscar. The 26 year old actor previously starred in “Slumdog Millionaire” and “The Last Airbender.”
Another film that raked in multiple nominations is “Arrival,” a science-fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve. The alien movie, starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, captured eight nominations, the bulk of them for directing and cinematography.
The Academy Awards will air on Sunday, Feb. 26. The show will be hosted by popular late-night television celebrity Jimmy Kimmel.
