Publications class creates yearbook, newspaper

January 24, 2017

Registration for the next school year will be starting up in the next few weeks. If you’re looking for an elective to take, look no further than Publications.

Publications is a class that produces the yearbook, paper newspaper, and Bettendorf Growl Online. Students also take pictures at events like sporting events, music concerts, dances, and other activities or clubs.

“I wanted to join Publications because I was on the newspaper team in middle school, and I really liked it and wanted to continue in high school,” Holly Harrington, a first year member of the team, said.

Publications students have also taken Journalistic Writing as a prerequisite to learn journalistic writing style and the different types of news stories.

“My favorite part of class is continuing the promise of  'Coverage YOU Can Count On,'” Andrew Ball said.

Ball has been in publications for two years and is currently the newspaper editor.

The class also takes an annual trip to the Iowa High School Press Association conference in Iowa City. This provides the opportunity to learn about newspaper and yearbook and meet writers from other schools.

“I joined because I took Journalistic Writing as a freshman and loved Ms. King. I wanted to be with her more so I just signed up for Publications. My favorite memory is sophomore year Fritzy Swearingen and I made a shrine for Matty B,” Damaris Stroker said.

Stroker is a yearbook editor this year with Annette Schneider.

If you have any interest in joining publications or want to learn more, sign up for Journalistic Writing or see Ms. King.
