Petition to prevent Mark Twain closure

A new petition is circulating on social media to prevent the closure of Mark Twain Elementary.

The petition was put on the school's PTA Facebook page Wednesday morning.

The petition states, "We, the undersigned, call on the Bettendorf Community School District School Board to keep Mark Twain Elementary School open.

Currently, the school board is looking to close one of the elementary schools and it appears they wish to close Mark Twain. This would mean a vacant building and possibly lower property values in the surrounding area; above all, our children would lose the school they love and many of whom are within walking/bike riding distance. As parents and citizens, we see the value in a strong neighborhood school that will continue to provide the excellent education we have come to know from Bettendorf Schools.

We are asking for your support in showing the Bettendorf Community School District School Board that Mark Twain is an irreplaceable resource for our city by signing our petition."

The decision to possibly close schools comes after estimated project costs for updating the elementary facilities was more than half the cost of building a new facility.

The district is discussing combining Mark Twain and Thomas Jefferson and making a three-section school.

According to current school boundaries, closing Mark Twain would force children in the green highlighted area of the boundary map to travel downtown to Jefferson's current yellow highlighted area.

It is not yet confirmed whether or not the school boundaries will be redrawn.

With a new three-section school, students from Grant Wood would be transferred throughout the district while Grant Wood is torn down and replaced with a new building.

Information about the future of the facilities will be released to the public as soon as more becomes available.
