Two Des Moines area police officers killed in attack, suspect captured
UPDATE: The two officers killed in Wednesday's "ambush-style attack" have been identified.
Officer Justin Martin, 24, of the Urbandale Police Department and Sgt. Anthony "Tony" Benimio, 38, of the Des Moines Police Department were killed early Wednesday morning.
ORIGINAL STORY: The suspect in the “ambush-style attack” that killed two Des Moines area officers has been taken into custody by the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office and Iowa State Patrol
Scott Michael Greene, 46, of Urbandale is suspected of shooting an Urbandale and Des Moines police officer early Wednesday morning as they sat in their patrol cars.
The first shooting occurred at 1:06 a.m. at 70th and Aurora in Urbandale.
An Urbandale officer was killed in that incident.
The second shooting occurred at Merle Hay and Sheridan at 1:26 a.m., killing a Des Moines officer.
Schools in Urbandale were closed as danger was imminent.
Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds released a statement Wednesday morning:
“The governor and lt. governor have been alerted to the attacks on law enforcement this morning. Shortly after the shootings, our office was briefed by the Department of Public Safety (DPS) on the shootings. DPS is working hand in hand with local law enforcement in the investigation. We will continue monitoring and working with law enforcement in the interest of public safety.
An attack on public safety officers is an attack on the public safety of all Iowans. We call on Iowans to support our law enforcement officials in bringing this suspect to justice. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the police officers who were tragically killed in the line of duty as well as the officers who continue to put themselves in harm’s way.”
