Bulldogs clinch district seven

After a long season, the Bulldogs have finally accomplished the first step towards their state title with a win over Iowa City High last Friday, Oct. 14. This top ten matchup was to determine the victor of the class 4A district 7 which had multiple top ten ranked teams throughout the season and is considered to be the most difficult district in the state.

Bulldogs coach Aaron Wiley and his team travelled to Iowa City High to take on the Little Hawks. At the time, Iowa City High was ranked fourth while Bettendorf was sitting at sixth. The Bulldogs came out to a very strong start with senior JMichael Young rushing in for a touchdown on the opening drive.

From there the defense went to work with seniors Jacob Durkin and Keegan Glaus racking up 5+ tackles on the night and junior Blake Rollinger picking up an interception against the Little Hawks. Glaus had quite the night in Iowa City; with his tackle proficiency he also had an interception of his own, along with a great offensive game with two touchdowns and 174 yards on the ground.

Bettendorf was strong in the air was well as on the ground. Suni Lane once again capped the Bulldog receivers with six receptions, 115 yards, and 33 yard receiving touchdown. Junior Jaron Shook picked up 24 receiving yards as well as senior Ryan Fall with 9.

After a strong win last Friday, Bettendorf once again moved up in the state ranks and now sits at sixth just behind Cedar Rapids Washington, the team Bettendorf lost to in week three in overtime. The Bulldogs have slowly been climbing the ranks from week to week and now are on a five game winning streak since that Cedar Rapids Washington loss.

This week football returns home for its last home game of the 2016 regular season against Davenport Central. Central, which is 3-5 after a 28-50 loss to Muscatine last weekend, is expected to be a win for Bettendorf but senior quarterback Zach Taylor may prove a challenge with 517 passing yards and five touchdowns.

This week is a preparation week for the Bulldogs as they have clinched a playoff berth and secured a home game for the first round of the playoffs. With Bettendorf coming off a “quite the statement” win against a top ten ranked Iowa City High, the team is settling in for a strong postseason run.
