It’s another day at the office for Bettendorf football as the Bulldogs took down Davenport North 38-0 last Friday at Touvelle Stadium. The game was anticipated to be a win for Bettendorf and it was just that with a strong game across the board.
With top Bettendorf rusher Keegan Glaus out last Friday the rushing was put on senior Eric Hradek and junior Nijel McIntosh. Both combined for a total of 109 yards and both ran in for a touchdown. Once again senior receiver Suni Lane led the Bulldogs in receptions with four; however, junior Ben Wilson pulled in more receiving yards with 60 total.
While the offense was at work trying to score, the other side of Bettendorf football was consistently stopping the Wildcat offense. The Bulldog’s defense was notably strong with five sacks on the night as well as a great tackle defense with three different players racking up six plus tackles.
Bettendorf turns around this week from playing a 1-5 team to a top-ten powerhouse, Iowa City High. City High quarterback Nate Wieland is a Northern Illinois University commit who in this season alone has 1041 passing yards compared to Bettendorf’s JMichael Young’s 754.
Currently, Bettendorf is ranked sixth in the state and Iowa City High is sitting at fourth (Associated Press Football Poll). This will be the fourth top-ten matchup Bettendorf has this season, where the Bulldogs fell to Des Moines Valley and Cedar Rapids Washington but defeated Muscatine.
While this is a top-ten matchup between numbers six and four, it is also a key game for district play. Bettendorf and City are both in a rugged class 4A district 7 where earlier this year three teams were ranked inside the top ten. The only two left standing now are Bettendorf and City High, so this will most likely determine the victor of the district and home field advantage in the postseason.
The Bulldogs have a trip over to a state powerhouse in Iowa City this Friday for the number one spot in District 7 and the rights to top-ten rankings. Coming off a superb victory last week against Davenport North, Bettendorf is up for a good game.
