The new Netflix original, Stranger Things, has been a hit among viewers after being released on July 15, 2016. Set in the 1980s, the show tells the story of a young boy, Will, who mysteriously disappears and is later shown captured by a creature known as the demogorgon. His mother, played by Winona Ryder, starts a complicated investigation with the police department. Ryder plays a single mother and shows the desperation of a mother searching for a child incredibly well. His friends, Mike, Dustin, and Lucas, find a strange girl in the woods who says she knows where Will went. They soon find out the girl’s name is Eleven and that she has supernatural abilities, like throwing people across rooms with her mind or keeping a van from running over the kids while on their bikes. Eleven is played by Millie Bobby Brown, a British actress. Although Brown doesn’t have many lines, her presence is intriguing, and she gives an emotional performance. The three boys are all great actors in their own right. Lucas, played by Caleb McLaughlin, and Dustin, played by Gaten Matarazzo, both provide some comedic relief during the more serious moments of the show. Mike, played by Finn Wolfhard, is the leader of the friends and shows his commitment to find Will by never giving up and believing in Eleven. As the friends and family get closer and closer to finding Will, a secret government lab steps in to stop them. The show’s ‘80s music and aesthetic sets it apart from other shows. Currently, Netflix has released the eight episodes in season 1 and the second season will be released in 2017. With an interesting plot and characters, Stranger Things cannot be missed!
