Circa ‘21 presents “Sister Act” promises to rejoice and have you dancing in the aisles

“Sister Act” is a feel-amazing musical comedy based on the 1992 hit film featuring Whoopi Goldberg. When a disco diva, Deloris Cartier, witnesses a murder committed by her lover, Curtis Jackson. Deloris is on the run from Curtis’s gang so she gets put in a witness protection program in the one place the cops think she won’t be found, a convent. While undercover as a nun, she finds herself at odds with the strange lifestyle and the strict Mother Superior. Finally after days of fasting and praying, Deloris uses her disco moves and soul singing voice to influence the choir. She brings new life to the church but also has blown her cover by the promotion on television. Soon, Curtis and the gang catch up with her, but only to find them up against “the power of the sisterhood.” “‘Sister Act’ is filled with powerful gospel music, outrageous dancing and a truly moving story; it will leave audiences breathless and wanting more,” according to The New York Times.” The movie was rewritten in 2006 for Broadway's, “Sister Act: A Divine Musical Comedy” in October of 2007. Circa ‘21 has been my favorite theater in the Quad-Cities ever since I was little; when I found out they were doing “Sister Act,” I got really excited because I grew up watching Whoopi in the movie. I was really glad Antoinette Holman got cast as Deloris, because she has an amazing voice and just the right amount of sass for the part. “For the past three years, Holman has served audiences attending Circa ’21 shows. The Bootleggers also perform for about 15 minutes or so before the main show,” according to QCTimes. Now Holman, gets to show off her skills as the lead in “Sister Act.” The show made me laugh, and the songs made me want to get up and dance on stage with the cast, but the show also had its emotional parts. I love shows that take you on a emotional roller coaster because one minute the show could be telling a joke and making you laugh uncontrollably, then the next, it's a emotional song or dialog about to make you cry. I recommend everyone to see this show; even though it has ties to the church, the story itself is about a woman who is struggling as a disco singer with no family who ends up finding exactly what she need in the convent, a family. “Sister Act” at Circa ‘21 closes on July 2, 2016, so you have plenty of time this summer to enjoy some “Dinner-tainment.”
