Pumpkin Spice has been a crazy popular trend for at least the last 13 years. Many companies have joined the trend of making pumpkin spice products. Trader Joe’s amount of pumpkin flavored products has increased since the store opened in the 1990s, and is expected to have more than 70 pumpkin items on the shelves this year, according to The Washington Post.
Pumpkin spice food and drinks products are many customer’s fall favorites. But not everyone might know what they are actually eating. According to Food.com, pumpkin spice consists of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger, and sometimes actual pumpkin.
Laura Meloy works at Whitey’s and says customers go crazy when the pumpkin flavored ice cream comes in season.
“The pumpkin shake came out on Sept. 1, a little bit earlier this year, and customers got very excited about it. They order it all the time,” Meloy said.
Meloy says she loves when the ice cream comes because the ice cream is only available for a limited time.
“It's my favorite ice-cream right now, I think it tastes like pumpkin,” Meloy said.
Andi Marzen feels a little different pumpkin spice. She believes there is a time and place to go crazy for it.
“I think some of the products they are making are over the top, but also it's very good. It only comes out once a year, so that's the people's time to crave it and go crazy over it,” Maren said.
Marzen loves pumpkin spice in iced coffee.
Marzen gets excited for fall because pumpkin spice is seasonal, and she loves the flavor.
“It reminds me of a chilly fall day,” she said.
According to CNBC, Starbucks was the company that started the pumpkin spice trend. Many companies have jumped on the trend by adding pumpkin spice flavored food and drinks to their menus. This includes Panera and The Coffee Bean.
Starbucks’ competitors are trying a different tactic, by actually using pumpkin to make their pumpkin spice lattes.
Brooke Menke is a pumpkin spice latte lover. She looks forward to when September comes because she looks forward to this season, and all the foods that come with it, especially the pumpkin spice latte from Starbucks.
“I got introduced to the latte from social media, and how people had been telling me that it was a new delicious new latte I had to try,” Menke said.
She gives the latte a four out of five stars, because she gets a little tired of it by the end of the season. Menke says that she does not want to improve anything about it because she already likes it a lot.
Not only are there the foods of pumpkin spice, but the scents.
“The pumpkin spice scent reminds me of my grandma; it's very cozy reminds me of fall, and fall is one of my favorite seasons. I love the way that it smells, and I love the way that pumpkin spice tastes,” Teresa Frommelt said, a buyer of pumpkin spice scents.
“I gets scents from Bath and Body Works and I like to light candles. I also like their Wallflowers that you plug into the wall. There's one called pumpkin pie and there's one called marshmallow latte pumpkin that I think smells really good,” Frommelt said.
All companies see the trend of the pumpkin spice and immediately want a part of it. Some products companies put out include pumpkin spice Pringles, chicken sausage, alcohol, jello, dog food, protein powder, marshmallows, peanut butter, and even Halloween costumes. You can get all of these items soon enough; fall is just around the corner.
